Here you can find the main events scheduled for New Year’s Eve 2025! But before that, we’d love to share a few fun anecdotes about Italy’s most beloved traditions for this special night.

How Italians celebrate New Year’s Eve: some funny traditions

Do you know all the funny (and sometimes slightly eccentric) Italian traditions for New Year’s Eve day?

  • The open window: many people open the window of a dark room just before midnight. This is believed to let out evil spirits and negative energy, allowing the air – and the new year – to start fresh and purified.
  • Red underwear: in Italy, red has always symbolized power, health, and fertility, and it’s considered a good-luck charm. That’s why wearing something red on New Year’s Eve – usually underwear – is practically a must!
  • Lentils and pomegranate: lentils are thought to bring wealth because of their coin-like shape, while pomegranate represents longevity, fertility, and prosperity. These two foods are never missing from a traditional Italian New Year’s Eve dinner.
  • Throwing away some old objects: in some smaller towns, people get rid of – or even break – old items as a way to say goodbye to the past and welcome the future. So be careful… and keep an eye on those windows!
